One month.
That's all the time it took to wipe out 99.9% of the world population.
It all started when a large meteor hit in one of the densely populated countries of Asia, causing death in massive amounts. Buildings were flattened. Everything collapsed. No one within the vicinity of the impact survived-- not even one person.
Next came the tidal waves. Huge tsunamis ravaged coastlines everywhere, flooding and causing even more death and destruction. When the waves stopped after what seemed like ages, everyone thought the damage was finally over, that life could continue on.
Not quite.
Because of the darkened skies and plummeting temperatures, plant life and in turn animal life died, just like in the dinosaurs' last days. For the most part, there was enough food already stockpiled, but it still took its toll and weakened many. Finally, the worst part of this apocalypse ensued-- the plague.
Some foreign contagion from the asteroid began to spread. It covered your skin in a greyish rash and painful sores. In some of the worst cases, you would throw up blood. Once the bacterium invader reached your brain, it was game over, if you were lucky. If you weren't, the contagion would turn you into a zombie of sorts, all function except for to spread the contagion lost. You'd live in this state, coughing and biting and vomiting, until your body gave out to hunger and exhaustion. With this development, the sickness quickly turned into a plague and nearly everyone left after the first string of event were killed. Nearly.
---
Nearly a year later, the plague is still raging, and people are beginning to give up hope until a mysterious organization pops up. They run a base in one of the more populated areas left. They claim to be a haven, and say they are trying to cure the disease. They take sick patients and make them comfortable for as long as they can, humanely ending their life if the disease progresses too far. Sure, if you live on their base you'll have to give routine blood samples, and every so often someone disappears under cloudy circumstances, but hey, if there's a chance for a comfortable life, everyone's jumping at it.
Things aren't always what they seem, though. The mysterious disappearances are caused by those who run the base. Healthy people are taken to test new chances at a vaccine, but there are almost no survivors (about 1/100 live), and the unhalthy are not treated nearly as humanely as you would hope. The infected and the survivors of the vaccine trials are victims of human experimentation, and the darkest secret of all? The vaccine is only to cure soldiers. The scientists of the base are hoping to be able to turn the disease into a weapon of biological warfare.

So yeah, basically that's the plot. Sorry for how horribly it's written, I just had to get it all down and wasn't really thinking about words and stuff. 'Tis long and complicated but hey, it'll be fun?
